After a post-doctoral fellowship, he joined the physical instrumentation program at EMBL in Heidelberg, in the group of Max Haider, developing cryo-technology for corrected LVSEM and EM applications. In 1996 he was appointed junior group leader in the cell biology program at EMBL.
